SUMMARY:Import From Zap Calendar 12212022 - Guitarists Chris Eldridge and Julian Lage
URL;VALUE=URI:https://iloveoswego.com/5007/guitarists-chris-eldridge-and-julian-lage.html
 ?tmpl=component
DESCRIPTION:Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge will improvise on their vintage guitars as t
hey try to surprise a Sheldon Hall ballroom audience in a performance at 7:
30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at SUNY Oswego.\n \nWith the help of Lage's and Eld
ridge's 1939 Martin guitars, the musicians will explore a world of "spontan
eous composition" in the free public performance presented by the SUNY Oswe
go music department.\n \nThe pair collaborated on a 2013 release titled "Cl
ose to Picture" in spite of their musical differences -- Lage's expertise i
n modern jazz and Eldridge's passion for bluegrass music. \n \nLage, a comp
oser and arranger as well as an instrumentalist, was the subject of Mark Be
cker's Academy Award-nominated documentary "Jules at Eight." His debut albu
m "Sounding Point" was nominated for a Grammy as Best Contemporary Jazz alb
um in 2010. His most recent duo album, "Free Flying" with Fred Hersch, rece
 ived a coveted five-star review in Down Beat magazine. \n \nEldridge is a f
ounding member of the Punch Brothers, which released two albums and receive
d two Grammy nominations. After graduating from Oberlin Conservatory with a
degree in music performance, he joined the bluegrass group the Seldom Scen
e, which received a Grammy nomination in 2007. Later on, Eldridge founded t
he bluegrass band Infamous Stringdusters that won Artist of the Year, Song
of the Year and Album of the Year for its debut album at the 2007 Internati
onal Bluegrass Music Association awards. \n \nJohn Shaffer, director of Art
swego, the college's arts presentation organization, says bringing performe
rs such as Lage and Eldridge to Oswego furthers the college's mission to br
ighten the cultural environment and to supplement academic offerings. For m
ore information on arts presentations at SUNY Oswego, visit oswego.edu/arts
