Lyla L. Elen passed away at 99 years old, on Tuesday, June 25.

Lyla was born in Lycoming, NY and was the youngest daughter of Guy and Hazel (Dennis) Newstead.

She completed her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Oswego State College.

She started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse until hired at Mexico Academy and Central School for the Fall of 1953 until she retired in June 1970.

She was a long time member of the Church of the Resurrection. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association.

Lyla was a charter member of the Scriba Historical Society and served as President and later as a Trustee.

In 2013, she was inducted into the Mexico Alumni Hall of Fame “in recognition of her performance, leadership and devotion to Mexico students.” She was pleased to receive this honor.

Lyla also served for 25 years as a Board of Directors Member and Secretary for the Continental Arms Collectors Association.

She was a member of the Goldfinch Chapter of the Home Bureau.

She is survived by her son, Joseph N. Elen, Jr of Colorado, her daughter Constance J Elen of DeKalb; her grandsons Joseph (Krista) Elen, III, Matthew (Katie) Elen and Stephen Elen: great grandsons, Connor, Ollie and Tobie: and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Joseph predeceased her as well as her brothers Courtney, Harwood and sister Norma.

The funeral service will be held at the Church of the Resurrection at 120 West 5th Street in Oswego at 10:30 AM on July 12th. The committal will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery.

The family invites all relatives and friends to a reception in the Great Hall at the Church of the Resurrection following the committal service.
