Oswego County STOP-DWI Coordinator David Hall announced that a statewide STOP-DWI “High Visibility Engagement Campaign” is planned for 420 Day, Sunday, April 20.

“April 20, also known as 420, is a day well-known in cannabis culture when some consumers may increase their use of the drug,” said Hall. “As marijuana can impair cognitive performance and slow reaction times, operating a motor vehicle after consuming it poses a threat to other people on the roads as well as the impaired driver.”

He also reminded people that using any drug – including some prescription medications – can impair their ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

“If you plan to use marijuana, please also use public transportation or a ride-sharing service – or designate a sober driver,” Hall continued. “Even easier, simply download the “Have a Plan” mobile app (www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp) and you will always be able to find a safe ride home.

“Impaired driving is completely preventable,” he added. “Help make a difference by having a sober plan.”

Law enforcement agencies and STOP-DWI coordinators across the state routinely join forces to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving to prevent injuries and save lives.

These “High Visibility Engagement Campaigns” are some of the many initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving. Other campaigns focus on the 100 Days of Summer, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the winter holiday season, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day.
