Write a commentOswego Industries Inc. and Arc of Oswego County joined advocates at the #InvestInUs Rally in Syracuse on Friday, March 21, at the New York State Fairgrounds to amplify the voices of individuals with disabilities and the Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who provide essential care.
Hosted by Arc of Onondaga and AccessCNY, the event highlighted the urgent need for better pay and resources for DSPs and increased funding to ensure individuals with disabilities receive the support and services they deserve.
The rally drew over 300 attendees, including more than 30 individuals and staff from Oswego Industries Inc. and Arc of Oswego County, who stood in solidarity with other organizations advocating for disability services.
Among those in attendance were Congressman John Mannion (CD NY-22), Senator Rachel May (NY-48), Senator Christopher Ryan (NY-50), and The Arc New York CEO Eric Geizer. Each expressed their support for the inclusion of a 7.8% funding increase in the final New York State budget and stood with advocates in opposition to federal Medicaid funding cuts, which threaten the sustainability of essential services.
Oswego Industries Inc. and Arc of Oswego County, along with several chapters of The Arc New York, remain committed to advocating for fair wages for Direct Support Professionals and sustainable funding for disability services. These professionals play a vital role in ensuring individuals with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives, and it is essential for New York State to invest in both the workforce and the individuals they support.
Attendees urged state leaders to prioritize disability services in the budget and invest in both the individuals receiving support and the professionals who provide it. The event reaffirmed that when the community unites, meaningful change is possible.
