OCATF 'Ain’t Just MisBehavin' Workshop
Friday, March 03, 2017, 09:00am - 04:00pm

Kari Dunn Buron

The Oswego County Autism Taskforce (OCATF) is bringing another valuable workshop for parents and educators this March entitled, “Ain’t Just MisBehavin,” Social Understanding and Emotional Regulation. The conference will be presented by Kari Dunn-Buron, educator and author.

The workshop planned for Friday, March 3 from 9:00-4:00 p.m. at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego is a project that O.C.A.T.F. is bringing to Oswego County in their continuous efforts to enhance the lives of those touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). “Having someone as knowledgeable and experienced as Kari present to our community is an opportunity that parents, caregivers, and service providers alike will not want to miss,” noted OCATF President, Tammy Thompson.

Over the past 10 years, there have been unprecedented advances in neuroscience related to the development of social behavior and emotional regulation. These advances include information about social awareness, social attention, self- awareness, self-management and self-control. This new research not only documents that these skills are brain-based, but emerging educational research indicates that these skills can be taught. The information in this presentation should be a part of every team discussion for all students who exhibit upsetting, confusing, challenging or even violent behavior.

The presentation includes an overview of Social Cognition, Executive Function and Emotional Regulation as they relate to Social Anxiety and a Loss of Emotional Control. Specific strategies used to teach social information and emotional regulation will be presented and of value to parents, caregivers and professionals.
