Caribbean Voices Series: "A Thousand Tropicanas: The Performance of Memories in Cuban-American Theatre"
Wednesday, November 01, 2023, 05:00pm

suny oswego caribbean voices series tropicanas talk 11.1.2023

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures invites you to join the Caribbean Voices Series throughout the Fall semester.

In this third speaking engagement, Dr. Lilianne Lugo Herrera will analyze how, since the 1950s, the Cuban cabaret Tropicana has been a recurring trope in the American imagination. Films, TV shows, and plays have utilized its space as a metaphor for Cuba—its culture, its people, and also as a site to reflect on the complex relationship between Cuba and the United States.

This talk examines four plays in which the symbolic and performative space of Tropicana is leveraged to delve into memories of exile and to present and explore visions of Caribbean diasporic communities."
