"Beans" is the coming of age narrative of a young girl who lives on the Khanasata:ke Mohawk Reserve during the "Oka Crisis," a 78-day armed stand off between Mohawk warriors and the Canadian Federal govenment, which began when the town of Oka wanted to extend a golf course onto an ancient burial ground of the Mohawk people. The film deals with themes of violence, land dispossession, treaty rights, sovereignty, anti-Indian racism and settler colonialism.
