Focus on Faculty Series Concert: Schubert & Schumann

SUNY Oswego music faculty vocalists will harmonize in a Focus on Faculty series concert featuring songs of romantic masters Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Sheldon Hall ballroom.

Tenor Todd Graber and soprano Mihoko Tsutsumi, with piano accompanist Juan La Manna, also of the college's music faculty, will perform selected songs of Austrian composer Schubert and two song cycles by Schumann, a German romantic composer.

The Schumann cycles -- sets of related songs, often on a romantic theme -- will feature "A Woman's Love and Life" and "The Poet's Love." The Schubert works will include selections from "Swan Song," a collection of songs the artist wrote near the end of his life. All will be sung in the original German, with translation provided for the audience.

"All of the pieces are very heartfelt and poetic, which is ear-opening for students," La Manna said.

The performers will use their trained voices, not microphones, to project to the audience.

"Students are used to amplified music. We thought about bringing something different to the table," La Manna said. "Listening to classical voices will be a brand-new music experience for many."

Tickets are $8 ($5 for SUNY Oswego students), and are available at all college box offices, online at tickets.oswego.edu or by calling 315-312-2141.

Parking is included in the price of the ticket, and is available in the lots adjacent to and across Washington Boulevard from Sheldon Hall. People with disabilities needing assistance should call 315-312-2141 in advance of the performance.
