Deb Sherwood owner of Maida’s Floral Shop on W 1st St in Oswego recently came across this beautiful handmade lace wedding dress and veil along with a photograph and a brief description on of the Oswego resident who wore this gown when she was married back in 1941.
She started to think that there must be other Oswego wedding gowns and brides of historical interest out there that should be honored and shared.
Oswegonian Dorothy Demm married husband Edward Demm, just prior to the invasion of Pearl Harbor in 1941. This beautiful bride in her handmade lace wedding dress became the Mother of two beautiful girls; Patty (Monroe - Forehand) and Judy (Tonkin). Dorothy worked at SUNY Oswego for most of her career. Husband Ed joined the Marines after the invasion of Pearl Harbor and served his country honorably.
Dorothy Demm is part of our Oswego History and we are pleased to honor her with small tribute.
The dress is now 80 years old and in remarkable original condition. To see Dorothy’s dress in person and her photographs visit Maida's Floral Shop Inc located at 215 W 1st St. in downtown Oswego during normal business hours Monday – Friday 9AM – 5PM or Saturday 9M – 2PM.
Ms. Sherwood’s idea quickly got legs and grew into an event with other local businesses that have since joined the effort, including; JP Jewelers, Port City Day Spa, Port City Wedding and Event Planning, Sterling Vineyards Maida's Floral Shop, and Woodchuck Saloon & Catering Service. The event fund-raiser will culminate with a fashion show and reception on Sunday May 31, at Maida’s Floral Shop. All proceeds will benefit the Oswego Renaissance Association.
To add some additional fun to the event there will be the “Ugliest” Bridesmaid Dress Contest as well.
