
Anthony “Tony” Tombolillo, 80, passed away peacefully at the Oswego Hospital, surrounded by his family, on October 16, 2016.
Tony was born on December 3, 1935 in Ogdensburg, NY to Sebastian and Antoinette (Pagano) Tombolillo.
Tony was predeceased by his brother, Peter Jay, at the age of 41/2 years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Madeleine Odin; four sons, Peter (Margaret) Tombolillo, Paul (Julie) Tombolillo, John (Denise) Tombolillo, and Mark (Jennifer) Tombolillo; two daughters, Antoinette (Phillip) Grasso, and Christine (Marty) Polmanteer; five grandsons, Jason (Brady) Grasso, Michael Tombolillo, Thomas Ferlito, Christian Tombolillo, and Kenneth Tombolillo; six granddaughters, Jessica Grasso, Kathleen Tombolillo, Madeleine Tombolillo, Angela Mia Tombolillo, Johnna Tombolillo, and Kaylee Won Polmanteer. He also leaves behind two sisters, Lucy McCabe and Ann Tombolillo; a brother, Lawrence Tombolillo; and several nieces and nephews.
Tony attended Holy Cross and St. Mary’s Academy in Ogdensburg, graduating on June 28, 1954. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on July 6, 1954, where he spent the next 20 years of his life, retiring on August 1, 1974. During his career, Tony attended several schools along the East and West coasts, and was assigned to several Coast Guard stations and ships in the Great Lakes and Alaska, including CG Station Mary Island (Ketchikan, Alaska), CG Station Tawas (E. Tawas, Michigan), CG Station Marblehead (Marblehead, Ohio), CG Station Tibbets Point (Cape Vincent, NY), CG 650420, CG Station Grand Travers (North Port, Michigan), and GS Woodbine 289, (Grand Haven), Michigan. Tony was promoted to officer during his career, and was also stationed at Galloo Island, where he was the last officer in charge before the station closed in April of 1973. Nineteen years later, he was recruited to officer in charge of Coast Guard Station in Oswego, which are now areas of Sodus Point and Galloo Island.
Upon retiring from the Coast Guard, Tony was employed at Niagara Mohawk Steam Station, Holiday Harbor Hotel, and Miller Brewing, for 18 years, until its doors closed.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 Friday, in St. Paul’s Church.
Burial will be St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 Thursday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
