On Friday night, the Art Association of Oswego held an opening reception for its current show, Making Good Still Life.

The exhibit showcases work by art students at Cayuga Community College, SUNY Oswego, and beyond, including iHeart Oswego’s own volunteer photographer, Abigail McKalsen. McKalsen is an art student at Cayuga Community College’s Fulton campus who has several graphite drawings on display for the show, including Grapes of Wrath, which is depicted on the exhibit poster.

In addition to the attention to detail and realism evident in her aforementioned graphite drawing, McKalsen has been experimenting with perspective and process through her coursework.

“In this one, I layered two still life [drawings] using a light box,” said McKalsen of her drawing, Double Still Life. “There is a lot going on here!” Within the chaos, certain themes still emerge, like the harms of consumerism and the dangers of putting too much artistic distance from one’s own life—as evidenced by the skull hidden behind the Kodak camcorder and mountains of clutter reminiscent of an over-stuffed attic.

The show's pieces are made in various media, ranging from pencil and painting to ceramics and photography. While much of the artwork is from artists studying within the county at SUNY Oswego and CCC's Fulton campus, the show also features art from students at Monroe Community College (above) and CCC's Auburn campus.

The exhibit will be available to view until April 28 at the Art Association of Oswego. Many of the pieces are available for sale, including both of McKalsen’s pieces.

The full schedule of the show is available on our very own community calendar. For more details about the AAO, visit their website at www.oswegoarts.com.
