'Arts Alive!' For St. Francis Commons Residents and SUNY Students

For SUNY Oswego students and residents at St. Francis Commons in Oswego art is alive at the assisted living residence.

Through the Arts Alive! Program, college students and seniors come together in a novel learning environment where “student” is “teacher”. Students from SUNY Oswego’s Art Club volunteer their time and talent teaching residents some basic techniques in a variety of mediums. The students get together with resident learners twice a month.

Recently students helped seniors with a watercolor project; offering some constructive suggestions and tips on techniques as the residents created their own works or art.

“Our residents truly enjoy the class and getting to know their young instructors,” said Peggy LiVoti, Director of Activities at St. Francis Commons. “The process of painting a picture from start to finish is rewarding, but interacting one-on-one while engaged in a learning activity has proven to be a great experience for all involved in this project.”

The program has been active at St. Francis Commons over the course of the last three college semesters, and the plan is to continue Arts Alive! well into the future.
