Audrey J. Chetney, 93 formerly of Oswego passed away Tuesday, May 27, at the home of her granddaughter in Coats, NC.
She was born in Oswego and was the daughter of the late Murray and Mabel Houghtaling Quackenbush.
Audrey was a Charter member of the Oswego Columbiettes, a volunteer at A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton and a good mother, Grandmother (Nana), Aunt Aud, Great and Great Great Grandmother. She enjoyed crafts and was a volunteer with the Oswego County Board of Elections. Mrs. Chetney was a former member of the St. Mary’s Women’s Club. She loved NASCAR and during retirement spent many years on the road following the NASCAR trail, she attended many races at the Oswego Speedway. She was a square dancer with The Shirts and Skirts square dance club out of Volney. Loved spending time with her three children and husband camping and traveling. She delivered her first grandchild ( Little Richie) in the front seat of a truck camper. Spent many years volunteering at Harborfest Oswego, riding the Trolley around and making people smile. Audrey enjoyed her time working at Stones Candy of Oswego and being a lunch lady at Fairgrieve and Volney School in Fulton Ny. She was a graduate of Oswego Highschool Class of 1951. She loved bringing penny candy to the children from the Holocaust that were living at Fort Ontario. Later in life she was an advocate for Breast Cancer Awareness. She was a Devoted Roman Catholic and loved to bring sunshine to everyone she met.
She was the wife of the late William C. Chetney of 72 years.
Mrs. Chetney is survived by one daughter, Linda and husband Richard Hyde of Raleigh, NC, two sons, William “Lee” Chetney and wife Wilma (Alkema) of Oswego, Timothy and wife Julie (Stoutenger) of Raleigh, NC, sibling Larry and wife Judy Reidy, 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her sisters Dorothea, Sevilla, and Mary Ann.
Calling hours will be from 4-7pm on Monday June 2nd at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second St, Oswego NY 13126.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Church and Shrine at 9:30am on Tuesday June 3rd, 107 West 7th St. Oswego NY 13126.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
