Barbara J. Handley-Place, 80, of Oswego, died March 26, 2016 peacefully surrounded by her family at Oswego Hospital.
Born in Fulton, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lucille (Orr) Huckabee.
Barbara was an integral part of the Oswego community but most of all, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She worked for Riley Elementary as a 3rd grade teacher for more than twenty years.
She also served at Oswego Hospital Auxiliary for 15 years and as their President for 7 years.
She was an active member of the Oswego Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Elk’s Auxiliary.
Barbara’s loving smile and warm greeting will be missed by all.
Barbara is survived by her husband, David Place; daughter, Karen (Richard) Gell of Baldwinsville; her two sons, Charles (Cheri) and Thomas (Donna) Handley of Oswego; her two brothers, Charles Huckabee of Central Square and James (Diane) Huckabee of Oswego; eight grandchildren, Brian (Elizabeth), Zachary, and Senna Handley, Erika (Michael) Garnto, Emily, Kristen, Chelsea, and Ryan Gell; two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Samantha Handley; David’s children Raymond (Kathy) Place, David (Rosemary) Place, and Beth Stone-Place; and his five grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her first husband, William B. Handley former owner of Burkes Home Center in Oswego and Fulton.
Calling hours will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Nelson Funeral Home.
Services will be at 9 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church Thursday, March 31.
Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
