Write a commentCornell Cooperative Extension is pleased to once again welcome Martin Bullis, an Oswego County artist, to the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center, located on State Route 183 in eastern Oswego County. On Sunday, September 20th from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM, Bullis will lead a hands-on workshop in basket weaving as part of the Center's Nature Inspires Series.
Martin Bullis started weaving baskets in the fall of 1995 at the Days Gone By basket shop in Phoenix, New York. Linda Sanders was his mentor and taught him all the different skills needed to weave baskets of all shapes and sizes as well as caned and woven chairs. Linda instilled in Martin an appreciation for details, history, and purpose behind each basket that was woven with each new technique. Martin has competed at the Yorker convention with an Adirondack Pack Basket where he was awarded a special judges award for exemplary craftsmanship of an historical reproduction. He has also been a weaver and demonstrator with Linda Sanders at the Great New York State Fair. Weaving baskets provides a calming and relaxing pastime that allows for good conversation, friendship, and creativity to flourish. It is Martin’s pleasure to share his passion with others and continue one of the oldest forms of artistry.
During this workshop, program participants will create their own market basket. The basket will measure 8” x 14” x 12” with a premade handle. The program fee for this artistic workshop is $4 per person plus $33.00 for the basket supplies. All tools and other supplies are provided. Pre-registration and payment of the $37.00 in advance is required as spaces are limited.
