Write a commentOn Wednesday, May 17th, at 7:00 PM, Superintendent Paul Lear will lead a Ludwig Bemelman’s themed walking tour of the Fort Ontario Military Reservation National Register District in Oswego, New York. The tour will assemble at the fort’s main parking lot and visit points described by Bemelman’s in his book about his World War I army service in the Medical Corps at Fort Ontario, “My War with the United States.”
After his army discharge Bemelmans became a famous artist and author of children’s books; he is most remembered for a series of books about the adventures of Madeline, a red -haired girl in a Paris orphanage. Bemelman’s died in 1962 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Fort Ontario State Historic Site is located at the north end of East Fourth Street in the City of Oswego, New York.
