Sunday, July 21, is National Ice Cream Day, but you don’t need an excuse to enjoy the delicious treats these local businesses have on offer.

Soft serve is a long-standing tradition in New York. The first soft serve machine was built in Buffalo, NY by Charles Taylor, followed shortly afterwards by familiar names like Tom Carvel of Carvel Ice Cream and then the team at Dairy Queen.

So, where are the best places to get your fill of frozen treats this summer? We’ve done the research for you, so all you need to do is get in the car and go!

Oswego

Bev’s offers a variety of treats, from brownie sundaes to this week’s twisted special: pineapple and strawberry Dole whip. Expect to enjoy dessert with a view when getting your ice cream here: the stand is located next to Rudy’s with fantastic views of Lake Ontario.

Six Scoops is located downtown on West Seneca Street, and features unique hard ice cream flavors like Apple Crisp and Michigan Pothole, as well as many traditional favorites. Two scoops will cost you $5 at this sweet little ice cream shop.

For our readers who may prefer a slightly healthier option this National Ice Cream Day, never fear! Just drop into The Organic Earthling's Zenergy Cafe for their fantastic array of frozen yogurt. According to iHeart Oswego photographer Jerry Maher, their German Chocolate Cake froyo is “like eating frozen buttercream as an ice cream.”

Fulton

In this city, the undisputed champion of ice cream is Scoops at Lakeview Lanes. This stand is hopping every day of the week, with numerous flavors of soft serve, ice cream nachos, and dips and toppings galore to add that little special something. The sundae of the week is Peanut Butter Cheesecake, with peanut butter soft serve, Reese’s pieces, Nutter Butter cookies, cheesecake bites, and several types of drizzle. Note that the sundae of the week changes each Wednesday, so hurry over!

An even more unique treat is available at the Big Dipper, located on Route 3 near Silk Road: gelato. The flavors at the Big Dipper are homemade and include fruity flavors like Strawberry, Raspberry, and Green Apple, as well as extra-sweet options like Cheesecake and Almond Joy. A medium will set you back $5.75.

Mexico / Parish

Located on Route 104 just north of Mexico, Twisted Treats & Treasures is a cute little ice cream stand with a refreshing menu. Unique flavors we’ve seen recently on their menu include Carolina Peach and Chocolate-Drizzled Caramel Corn.

Plus, Twisted Treats’ attached restaurant, The Dog House, has a full menu of sandwiches and appetizers for those who need a little sustenance ahead of their ice cream run.

BONUS: Best Ice Cream Sandwiches

While Man in the Moon Candies in Oswego is more well-known for its delicious array of chocolates, they also offer a delightful ice cream sandwich featuring a soft, chewy cookie and generously filled with vanilla ice cream.

If you prefer ice cream sandwiches with a crunchy outer cookie, then make your way to Twisted Treats in Parish.
