The H. Lee White Maritime Museum at Oswego will be offering a special program this Sunday, August 2, 2015 at 2:30 pm. Both the U.S. Coast Guard Birthday and National Lighthouse Day, fall very close together on August 4th and August 7th, respectively.
For the last several years the Maritime Museum has celebrated with a lecture and gathering to honor those that had served and currently serve in the USCG. They are the "Keepers of the Light". This year, Ted Panayotoff, Chair of the Oswego Lighthouse Restoration Committee will give an update on the restoration work currently underway and will also talk about the history of the USCG.
In addition, a special display will be unveiled during this event. The objects were donated by Michael DeLong of Monson, Massachusetts to the H. Lee White Maritime Museum of Oswego this summer and include ship models made by Karl Jackson, Assistant Keeper, while he was stationed at the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse. Also part of the exhibit is Jackson's burial flag, which was presented to his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Jackson at his funeral services. Jackson died during the 1942 USCG Oswego Lighthouse tragedy. The objects were passed on to Marjorie DeLong, Michael's mother. Pictured accepting the donation is Michael Pittavino, the Maritime Museum's curator.
