Members of the CiTi Culinary Arts program served up healthy lunches and smiles to hundreds of attendees of State Senator Patty Ritchie’s Senior Health and Wellness Fair in Scriba last week.
The Health Fair, an annual tradition by Senator Ritchie’s office to connect local senior citizens with community resources to promote an active lifestyle, provided an opportunity for CiTi students to practice their skills in a real-world setting.
“We focus on safety, organization and working as a team,” said CiTi Culinary Arts Instructor Samuel Passer. “Our students get to learn management skills, how to prep a menu and run a kitchen while participating in community service.”
CiTi students had been working for days to prepare more than 700 meals, which they dished out while getting a chance to interact with their customers.
“It’s great to be able to work with people instead of just being behind a counter and it’s awesome to listen to all their stories,” said second-year Culinary Arts student Alyson Overend. “We get to practice our organizational skills and work on making everything one fluid motion.”
The Culinary Arts program also helps cater Senator Ritchie’s Jefferson County Senior Health and Wellness fair and will be participating in Oswego County Opportunity’s Giving Thanks Dinner on November 1 in Oswego.
