The Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation (CiTi) is working with local Oswego County industry partners in the development of a new career and technical education (CTE) program: Industrial Electrical Technologies (IET).

The two-year IET program will start in the 2018-19 school year, providing hands-on skill development and technical training required for entry-level employment. The program is designed to help meet increasing labor demands in the area.

“It’s a big need right now and has been for some time,” says Greg Hilton, engineering and maintenance manager at Huhtamaki in Fulton.

Students will learn how to install, troubleshoot and maintain industrial electrical systems using state-of-the-art tools of the trade, which will prepare them for careers as electricians, transmission technicians, linemen, residential wiremen, electrical technicians and controls electricians.

Industrial Electrical Technologies is one of the fastest growing professions in Central New York with average salaries ranging from $45,500 to $65,500.

“The curriculum was developed in collaboration with industry partners,” says CiTi CTE Coordinator Lisa Prye. “Students will get to take advantage of internship experiences and co-ops during the second year of the program.”

During a recent presentation to prospective students, Novelis HR Training Coordinator Dave Lloyd shared some of the qualities Novelis is looking for in addition to skill set.

“Safety is a huge priority in our company,” said Lloyd. “We also are looking for people who can work well with other people, be a team player and be on time.”

High school students interested in the IET program at CiTi can find more information on their website, www.CiTiboces.org/CTE, and talk with their high school counselor.
