As boating season approaches, the City of Oswego reminds boaters to take important precautions to keep their families safe while enjoying the beautiful waters of Lake Ontario and surrounding areas.
Each third Saturday in May starts National Safe Boating Week, the kick-off of the annual National Safe Boating Campaign. National Safe Boating Week is a great time to make sure you are ready to set sail safely for the season. City of Oswego Mayor Robert Corradino reinforced the importance of National Safe Boating Week by issuing an Official Proclamation at the Common Council Meeting on Monday night.
Mayor Corradino stated, “Safe boating begins with preparation and planning for unexpected emergencies on the water. Wearing life jackets, having proper means of communications, creating a float plan, taking safe boating courses, and participating in vessel safety checks are all important actions to take to keep you safe.”
City of Oswego Fire Chief Paul Conzone stated, “Over 650 people die each year in boating related accidents in the United States; 75% of those fatalities are caused by drowning. We encourage everyone to wear an approved life jacket while boating. A life jacket stowed away in a compartment will not be much use in a sudden emergency on the water.”
The City of Oswego will be hosting a promotional photo opportunity at Wright’s Landing Marina on Friday, May 16th at 10am to help kick off Boating Safety Week and “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day” in Oswego. City employees, local officials, and area water safety partners are encouraged to participate in the photo.
The Oswego Fire Department will also be participating in the Lake Ontario Waterfront Festival on Saturday, May 17th at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum.
The City of Oswego recommends these tips for boaters:
