A brand new program designed especially for older adults is planning to open its doors this summer. The Cornerstone Club will offer members a place to socialize and take part in activities with staff available to provide supervision, health and nutrition monitoring, all in a safe location that is easily accessible to the community.

The social adult day club will be located at the newly renovated Catholic Charities site at 808 West Broadway (State Route 3) in the City of Fulton, and serve the entire county.

Club members can arrive as early as 7:30 a.m. and stay until closing time at 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Attendance options are flexible; members will be able to attend the program based on their preferences, either in full-day or half-day increments.

Developed by St. Luke Health Services, The Cornerstone Club will be a structured, comprehensive program that provides functionally impaired individuals a safe place to socialize and receive personal care and nutritional services, in a comfortable and engaging setting.

The Club’s professional staff will provide personal care to members that includes hands-on assistance with mobility, eating, medication supervision and other activities of daily living. A nutritious lunch and snacks are included. Those benefiting from the program may be experiencing limitations due to a functional impairment such as a stroke, or cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's disease or other dementia-related illnesses.

Members can arrange for their own transportation or let The Cornerstone Club arrange for transportation services as needed.

Physical therapy services can be provided on-site using a therapy service of ones choosing.

Program enrollment can be paid privately, funded through a Managed Long Term Care Plan, or other programs. Rates are based on full or half-day visits. Scheduling is flexible; members can visit as often as they choose during the week.

“We know from experience that being a family caregiver for an older adult can be a very difficult and demanding responsibility,” said Nicole Greenier, the program’s new director. “The Cornerstone Club will provide respite services that will help alleviate stress by providing caregivers a place to bring their loved one that offers a structured program that will promote interactions that enhance quality of life.”

The Cornerstone Club is designed as an alternative to institutional care; helping keep people in their home by providing a safe and structured environment for those who need some level of supervision or services on a regular basis, while offering their caregivers respite throughout the day while they are at work or other engagements.

Greenier noted, “What we believe will make this program attractive to family caregivers, apart from the accessible location, is the flex attendance options and the safe, structured level of engagement we will provide to club members.”

A grant from the Shineman Foundation will assist The Cornerstone Club in equipping the new program, making for a comfortable and engaging space for participants in the newly renovated building that will also house Catholic Charities of Oswego.

The program is now enrolling participants. Enrollment begins with an initial interview and assessment that helps staff to understand each person’s interests and expectations. Each participant will have their own individualized person-centered service plan developed by club staff in collaboration with participants and their caregivers.

The Cornerstone Club, which is planning to open at the beginning of August, will follow New York State guidelines and regulations for the operation of a Social Adult Day Care program.

The Cornerstone Club is made possible by the generous support of The Shineman Foundation and the St. Luke-John Foster Burden Fund. Community partners include Catholic Charities of Oswego and Oswego County Opportunities, Inc.
