A training class called A Crash Course For The Motorcyclist was held on Saturday April 23 at the Minetto Volunteer Fire Department’s station on County Route 24.
Taught by experienced riders Tim Tobin from Rochester and Melissa Hyde from Syracuse, the course is designed to help riders know what to do if they come upon the scene of an accident involving a motorcyclist.
Geared toward motorcycle club members and those who participate in group rides, Saturday’s class was well attended by motorcyclists preparing for the coming riding season.
Hyde and Tobin teach Accident Scene Management(ASM) classes for the Road Guardians, a nationwide motorcycle safety organization. Both are members of Rescue Riders, a group which provides safety and medical coverage for group rides.
“ASM has taught nearly 40,000 students through a network of over 100 instructors in 31 states, and has become the largest Motorcycle Trauma Training organization in the world. ASM leads the way with instructors in South Africa, Australia, the Philippines and the USA and Canada,” Hyde said.
During Saturday’s class, Tobin and Hyde instructed those attending in topics such as scene safety, visibilty for safety, emergency medical equipment, and techniques and strategies for providing accident protection during large group rides. Tim Tobin said that the pair will also be teaching an advanced class in Horseheads, NY on May 14th. "The advanced course covers additional first aid, and even has a session devoted to safely removing a motorcycle off a trapped rider," he said.
Melissa Hyde said that the pair have been teaching classes for most of the winter. “We have basic classes on May 7th, and 2 on the 21st in Cicero and Groton. That will be it before the riding season begins. We all want to be out riding during the good weather.”
The class was sponsored by the Upstate Biker Lawyer, Tom Shimmerling, with Shimmerling law offices at NYLawHelp.com. For more information, the group’s website is Roadguardians.org.
