Three students from Frederick Leighton Elementary School this week qualified for the the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Finals with sixth-grader Yavuz Damkaci as the top overall finisher.
Damkaci correctly spelled the word “cyclops” during the fourth round of the annual competition, which featured 21 of Leighton’s top spellers.
Fifth-grader Kevin Waters, who took second place, and third-grader Grace St. Onge, third place, will join Damkaci representing their school at the Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Finals, held at Oswego High School on March 17.
Spellers compete against students from the greater Oswego area with a chance to earn a trip to Washington, D.C. and enter the famous Scripps National Spelling Bee, broadcast live on national television.
Leighton faculty members Jennifer Symborski, Jennifer Cahill and Elizabeth Photos served as judges for the event with Amy Armet as moderator. The three winners received gift cards from The River’s End Bookstore.
