When the doors opened to kick off the Fall 2024 season of the Oswego Music Hall on Saturday evening, people began streaming in.
A full house audience greeted the Delaney Brothers bluegrass ensemble, who have been the season-opening performers for three years running.
The evening began a bit earlier than the usual 7:30 pm start time, with a meet and greet celebrating Delaney Brothers founding member John Delaney's birthday.
The celebration included a cake, and the crowd joining together to sing Happy Birthday to John (who declined to say what number birthday he was celebrating).
After an introduction by emcee Tim Nekritz, the band of Brothers (supplemented by guest fiddler Jessica Collins) kicked into a pair of sets of rousing bluegrass, some spirited gospel, a few Celtic-tinged tunes, and even some classic traditional hill music.
Each band member was highlighted several times throughout the evening. They shared vocal duties throughout, with John Delaney predominantly singing lead. His 2- and 3-part harmonies with bassist Jonathan Delaney and banjo player Scott Corbett fit perfectly into the band's cohesive playing. Guitar/mandolin player Luke Parsnow also contributed a song or two.
The audience showed their appreciation for the band's musicianship, applauding as each solo was completed. The Delaney Brothers earned a standing ovation at the end of their performance.
Next up at the Oswego Music Hall will be an Open Mic Night on Friday, September 27. The following night, Saturday September 28 will bring folk, blues and Americana from Alice Howe and Freebo to the stage, with Oswego's own Cam Caruso opening.
The Oswego Music Hall is located inside the historic McCrobie Civic Center on Lake Street in Oswego. Tickets for upcoming shows are available online at www.oswegomusichall.org or at The River's End Bookstore in downtown Oswego.
