Dr. Alan Joseph Davies passed away peacefully on April 27, 2013.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1925, in London, England, the youngest child of Dorothy Agnes Louise Shaw and Edward Wyndham Davies. He had two brothers, Ted and Ivor.
Dr. Davies obtained his medical degree from the University College Hospital, in London, and married Patricia Mary Johns. While he was serving his post-graduate army service in Aldershot, Hampshire, he and Patricia had a daughter, Susan Jane.
Upon leaving the army, Dr, Davies practiced general surgery in London and completed a fellowship at the prestigious St. Mark's Hospital for Colo-Rectal Surgery. He was awarded the Huntarian Medal for research on carcinoid tumors and also spent a year in Chicago, Ill., as a research fellow.
In 1965, he moved to the United States and practiced surgery in Rochester. While in Rochester, a second daughter, Sarah Helen, was born. A year later, an excellent job opportunity moved the family to Toronto, Canada, where he practiced at Toronto General Hospital for two years.
The opportunity to make a difference in a small, underserved town presented itself in Oswego, and he practiced surgery there for many years. When arthritis became a serious issue, he developed a thriving family practice. He was also the Alcan (Novelis) physician for 20 years.
He eventually met Maria Merenda and they married in 1996. They had many happy years together. He particularly enjoyed her wonderful cooking and devotion. He was also delighted to have two more girls in his life, Maria's daughters, Lesa and Mariabeth.
In his retirement, he developed a keen interest in painting. He demonstrated a great talent and was invited to have a public exhibition of his work at the Oswego Library in 2011. While in declining health he maintained a sharp mind and intellectual curiosity. He continued to be an avid reader and to practice his artistic pursuits.
He will be a great loss to Oswego and to his family. We will miss him dearly.
Dr. Alan Davies is survived by his daughters, Susan and Sarah (Will Ferguson), of Pinetop, Ariz.; his wife Maria, of Oswego; her daughters, Lesa (Luke Probst), of Manlius, and Mariabeth Hoebel, of Oswego; as well as his six grandchildren. Sarah's children are Emma, Ian and Mary Ferguson; Lesa's children are Robert and Stephen Probst, and Mariabeth's son is Rhys Warner.
Funeral services and burial will be held privately at the convenience to the family.
