Write a commentThe Fulton Amateur Radio Club, FARC, held their Annual Christmas luncheon on December 3rd at the RFH’s Hideaway, Phoenix, New York.
Approximately 34 members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal and a very informative talk on the Drone Operations by the 174th Attach Wing, Syracuse, NY.
To the military, they are UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) or RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems). However, they are more commonly known as drones. Drones are used in situations where manned flight is considered too risky or difficult. They provide troops with a 24-hour "eye in the sky", seven days a week. Each aircraft can stay aloft for up to 17 hours at a time, loitering over an area and sending back real-time imagery of activities on the ground.
Col. Belton has served five deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He is mission qualified MQ-9 Reaper Pilot and has 300 hours of mission time over Afghanistan. Col. Belton related to the group that he is knowledgable and holds a license in Amateur Radio.
