The donation was used to purchase catcher’s equipment, balls, and T-ball tees for the newly re-formed Hannibal Recreation t-ball and baseball teams.
Billy Truax and Cindy DeWolf also pitched in, personally purchasing throw-down bases for the teams.
Team coordinator and coach Tiffany Knight said, “Parents are telling me their kids are so excited to play! We’re so thankful for the community coming together, particularly the donation from the Fairdale IOOB.”
The Village of Hannibal sponsored t-shirts and hats for the children’s teams, with special efforts from Mayor Ronald Greenleaf. The donation from the Fairdale IOOB, an effort that was spearheaded by Ed DeWolf, helps ensure players do not need to provide their own equipment to participate.
Multiple attempts have been made in the past few years to get Hannibal’s recreational sports teams back up and running, but different obstacles kept getting in the way. Knight’s energy and enthusiasm have helped re-ignite the co-ed program, which is free and open to children ages 4 through 12 across Oswego County. In fact, over 120 children have signed up to play either t-ball or baseball, with a fairly even split between the two sports.
Each team is made up of 10 or 11 players, and practices began for all teams the week of April 29. The recreational teams are playing each other; games started the week of May 6th. The season’s games are being held at Hannibal’s Dennis M. Kenney Middle School.
