Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year, especially in upstate New York.
While you are enjoying leaves changing color and cooler temperatures, make sure to stop at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center in Williamstown! Fall-themed programming will be offered in September for everyone to enjoy. If you aren’t able to attend a program, the trails are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days of the year. There is no parking fee and there is a map of the trails when you arrive.
The Autumnal Equinox will take place on September 23rd, which is also known as the first day of fall. Join the environmental educator a week earlier, on Saturday, September 17th at 10:00 a.m. to learn about this astronomical event on an Autumnal Equinox Hike. The group will discuss what is to be expected in nature during this season, like shorter days, temperatures dropping or wildlife preparing for winter by stocking food. Then, everyone will head out on a guided hike through the woods to look for signs of fall. There may be many leaves beginning to change color or geese starting their migration south. Boots, sneakers, or closed-toe shoes are recommended, and it is requested you please dress accordingly for the weather on the day of the program.
On Friday, September 29th at 6:30 p.m., head to the Center for s’mores and more! The educator will have supplies for s'mores by the campfire, followed by a nighttime hike looking for nocturnal animals! The group will gather around the fire pit and the Adirondack lean-to on the facility, enjoying sweet treats provided by the Center. Then, following the light of the full moon, the educator will lead a guided hike through the trails looking and listening for various creatures of the night. We encourage you to bring a headlamp or flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot.
These programs are designed for nature lovers of all ages; anyone from individuals to families are encouraged to attend! All youth must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program. The fee for these programs is only $4 per person, or $12 for a family. Children under the age of three are free! Preregistration is requested.
