Oswego Firefighters were alerted to a residential house fire at 8:10PM Wednesday evening on West Third Street in the City.

Units arrived two minutes after being alerted to find active fire coming from the roof of the building. Fortunately, the occupants, all college students, were able to escape the fire without injury. This fire, however could have had a more tragic outcome.

According to the owner of the building he had accidentally started a small fire hours before while cutting the metal roof. Although he thought the fire had been extinguished, the fire was actively burning in the wall of the house and eventually spread to the attic.

According to the occupants, it was only when one went across the street to their car and began to return that they noticed the fire on the outside of the building. They alerted others and the first call was made to the fire department.

Fortunately, this house had working smoke detectors, however if this fire went unnoticed in the middle of the night, the outcome could have been tragic.

In 2018, over 3,500 Americans died in building fires. Having working smoke detectors, closing your door when you sleep, properly discarding smoking materials, and calling the fire department at the first signs of fire can save lives and reduce damage to your property. No one was injured in this fire.

Anyone with information about this fire should contact the Oswego Police at (315)342-8120.
