There are 15,000,000 people in the world who lack simple, clean water. Jessica Drake, of Oswego, is teaming up with the Uganda Water Project to ensure everyone in that African community has clean water.
"I've always had a heart for the less fortunate. When I began to learn about other cultures like Uganda, I focused my efforts towards providing them with water and from there decided to reconnect Oswego with Uganda," Drake said.
For just $3,500, Drake ensures that Oswego can provide clean water for 400 people. The tanks will last at least 30 years, according to Drake. The Ugandan Water Project has already installed 103 rainwater collections tanks in Uganda. The project is based out of Bloomdale, N.Y.
Drake realized how lucky she had it in what she likes to call the city, "Where the water never ends." After discovering this Ugandan Water Project, she spoke with Mayor Thomas W. Gillen about her efforts to raise awareness about this project. Drake discussed how Gillen loved the idea and is planning on issuing a proclamation for Oswego to be a part of these actions to assist Uganda.
"The goal is to really just get the word out right now. While it costs $3,500 for one well, if every person in Oswego just donated .20 cents this well would be funded," Drake pointed out. "I know this would not happen, but if I can just get some people involved and donating, it will help this project get started,"
Drake is already speaking at local events and fundraisers around town and is planning on speaking at more. For more information on how to become involved or to donate toward the project, call Drake at 315-591-8778
About the Ugandan Water Project:
The Ugandan Water Project is sponsored by U.S. organizations and is centered around helping people of Eastern Africa (Uganda) gain accessibility to clean water. The goal of this non-profit organization is to pull people out of poverty and be that catalyst which helps them live in a more sustainable and healthy way.
Each 2,500-gallon rainwater collection tank provides a stable source of drinking water for about 400 people. A project can be installed in about 30 days and costs $3,500 for a system with a lifespan of about 30 years.
