On Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 21st, 2016, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the annual “Kites Over Fort Ontario” event will return to the scenic and windswept grounds of Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego, New York.

Kite experts from the United States and Canada, including members of NYKE (New York Kite Enthusiasts), and noted Kite Historian Thom Shanken, will assist kite fliers of all ages and skill levels. People are invited to bring their own kites to the fort or purchase them from a kite vendor.

Weather permitting, kites up to 450 square feet with 150 foot long tails will soar above the fort and be visible from miles around. Featured activities will include the Rokkaku Kite Battle, the Running of the Bols, and the children’s favorite, the Candy Drop. Participants and observers are encouraged to bring a picnic basket while enjoying some good old-fashioned outdoor fun. Other Armed Forces Day activities include a 1:00 PM ribbon cutting ceremony to open the fort’s new orientation exhibit, and an exhibition of .30 caliber M-1 Carbines by author and expert Larry Ruth.

Admission to the old stone fort and grounds will be free on Armed Forces Day; the gates will close to the public at 5:00 PM. For more information on the exhibit contact Historic Site Manager Paul Lear at (315) 343-4711, or [Paul.Lear@parks.ny.gov]. Fort Ontario State Historic Site is located at the north end of East Fourth Street in the City of Oswego, New York.
