Martin Bullis, an Oswego County artist, will lead a hands-on workshop in basket weaving as part of Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center's Nature Inspires Series. Introduction to Basket Weaving, will take place at 2:00 pm on Sunday, March 15th.
During this workshop, program participants will learn all about basketry. Bullis will conduct a brief basket weaving demonstration before the class will try their hand at it. He will also instruct on how baskets have been used by many different cultures and describe the symbols embedded in them.
Martin Bullis started weaving baskets in the Fall of 1995 at the Days Gone By basket shop in Phoenix, New York. Linda Sanders was his mentor and taught him all the different skills needed to weave baskets of all shapes and sizes as well as caned and woven chairs. Linda instilled in Martin an appreciation for details, history, and purpose behind each basket that was woven with each new technique. Martin has competed at the Yorker convention with an Adirondack Pack Basket where he was awarded a special judges award for exemplary craftsmanship of an historical reproduction. He has also been a weaver/demonstrator with Linda Sanders at the Great New York State Fair. Weaving baskets provides a calming and relaxing pastime that allows for good conversation, friendship, and creativity to flourish. It is Martin's pleasure to share his passion with others and continue one of the oldest forms of artistry.
The program fee for this artistic workshop is $4 per person plus $18.00 for the basket kit. All tools and other supplies are provided. This hands-on workshop does require advance registration and payment since seating is limited.
