The week of June 26 – July 2, 2016 has been designated the 19th annual “National Mosquito Control Awareness Week” by the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA), an organization dedicated to preserving the public’s health and well-being through safe, environmentally-sound mosquito control programs since 1935.

West Nile virus was detected in samples of mosquitoes collected in two Oswego County locations, the Oswego County Health Department reported today. The virus was found in bird-biting mosquitoes collected in the towns of New Haven and Albion, according to Director of Public Health Jiancheng Huang.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus was found in a mosquito sample collected during routine testing on Toad Harbor Road in West Monroe. The sample was collected Aug. 24 by the Oswego County Health Department in the same area that EEE was found last week.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today that the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus was found in three additional mosquito samples collected in the Toad Harbor Swamp. The new samples of infected mosquitoes were collected in the same vicinity of two samples that tested positive for EEE in late August.
The Oswego County Health Department has reported that a SUNY Oswego freshman has contracted the mumps virus. The student began showing symptoms last Friday and was diagnosed and treated at the college's Mary Walker Health Center on Monday. The student was immediately isolated to prevent the spread of the disease on campus.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today that an Oswego resident is recovering from West Nile virus. The resident was hospitalized and is now recovering at home.
Due to low numbers of mosquitoes and recent test results that show no evidence of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, the Oswego County Health Department has decided not to conduct aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor area at this time.

The Oswego County Health Department announced today that Eastern equine encephalitis virus was detected in bird-biting mosquitoes collected last week near the Toad Harbor Swamp in the town of Constantia.
