Saturday, March 8 is International Women's Day worldwide. Recognized by the United Nations, the day is celebrated each year to advocate for Women's Rights, to call for an end to discrimination and to promote the empowerment of women.
Locally, two area organizations joined hands for a "Line The Bridge" protest from 10:00 a.m. until noon along the Bridge Street/State Route 104 Bridge in downtown Oswego. DAWN - the Democratic Action Women's Network and the recently formed group Indivisible - Oswego County called on their members and supporters to come out on Saturday in support of women.
Approximately 150 people braved icy temperatures and winds gusting near twenty miles per hour to march in solidarity. They carried signs, flags and banners representing many of the numerous issues that face women and families in our country today.
Members of Indivisible-Oswego County also marched in the Oswego St. Patrick's Parade at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
Under bright blue skies, the marchers were greeted by horns honking, headlights flashing and waves from many vehicles that drove by on the busy main street of Oswego. Pedestrians and people walking their dogs wound through the throngs lining the bridge as well, while a pair of brass musicians played tunes at the corner of the Litatro Building.
Also visible in the gallery of signs were many showing support for Ukraine, as well as protesting against recent policy changes by the United States government under the new administration.
