The Oswego County 4-H Program, part of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County will be offering an Introduction to Fly Fishing Program for youth.

This youth fly fishing program is a series of four classes that will provide youth with the basic skills and understanding of fly fishing. The classes will begin with an introduction to the sport along with salmon and trout natural history lessons. Youth will learn how to assemble and cast a fly rod, tell the difference between wet and dry flies along with insect identification, and how to tie simple flies. The series includes at least two fishing excursions in Oswego County.

Classes will be held on Monday nights, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., May 5th and 12th and June 9th and 16th. There will be a fishing rain date of June 23rd. All meetings will begin at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County offices in Mexico. This fly fishing program is open to youth 11 years of age and older. Because this program is based on the philosophy, “Learn by Doing”, space is limited to eight youth for this program, and registration is required. To register, go to reg.cce.cornell.edu/youthflyfish25_235 The fee for this course is only $30.00. Participating youth do not need to own fly fishing equipment; all gear and necessary supplies will be provided.
