Irene Frances Dewine, 83, a resident of Thompson Road in the town of Oswego, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the Westchester Medical Center with her family by her side.
Irene was born in Liverpool, NY, the daughter of the late William and Genevieve (Wojcieson) Davis, and grew up on Onondaga Hill. She was a 1958 graduate of Onondaga Central High School.
She was the wife of the late Joseph C. Dewine, whom she married on June 24, 1961 at Corpus Christie Church in Nedrow, NY. Mr. Dewine passed away in 1990.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed from 1994 to 2022, as a court attendant with the Oswego County’s Sheriff’s Department. She had previously worked as a Corrections Officer from 1976 to 1990.
In the past, she had also worked as a nurse’s aide at the Oswego Hospital, and at St. Luke Nursing Home. She was a member of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Benevolent Association, serving as its treasurer. She was also a former member of the Columbiettes. Irene was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, and a woman of strong faith. Family meant everything to Irene, and she took great pride in affectionately being known as “mom” and “nana”.
She is lovingly survived by a daughter, Colleen Dewine of Oswego, and four sons, Tim Dewine, Jeff Dewine, Patrick Dewine, and Sean Dewine, all of Oswego. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Nick, Katie, Kris, and Kelly; and one great-grandson, Freddie. Irene is also survived by two nieces and several cousins.
In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by a son, William T. Dewine, and her brother, William F. Davis, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, December 28, 2023, at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and Shrine, 103 West 7th Street in Oswego.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
