Friends of the Library announces an upcoming Author Night from 6-7:30 p.m., May 29, in the Community Room at the Oswego City Library.
Local author John M. Canale will be discussing two of his books. The first, "A Life's Journey: The Battle of the Bulge and Youth," was published in 2011 and deals with the realization of Canale's dreams of becoming a teacher as well as honoring all those who participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
"The purpose of this book is to show reasons why teaching is an honorable profession, why I chose to teach and how some of the accomplishments were achieved throughout this 39-year period in the work force, including a three year and twenty-six month service at home and in the The European Theater of Operations during World War II," Canale said.
The second book, "A Handbook on Participation in Government, Oswego Politics," gives an insider's view of Oswego politics from Mr. Canale's experience as an alderman from 1970 through 1991.
Both books meet the criteria for use in Public Schools in New York State.
Canale is a local teacher and former chair of the social studies department at the Oswego High School. He is now retired from teaching full time, but still works as a substitute teacher with the Oswego City School District. He served as a city of Oswego alderman from 1970-1991.
He was a Staff/Sgt during World War II, serving with the men of Company F, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, 3rd Army commanded by General George Patton. He was a participant in the Battle of the Bulge – one of the greatest battles of WWII - and was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross and the Combat Infantry Man's Badge.
