Temperatures are heating up and we’re heading into the dog days of summer!
Despite the heat and humidity, nature is teeming with life and activity during this time of year. Green frogs and bullfrogs are croaking around ponds, summer wildflowers are in full bloom, and fields and yards are filled with grasshoppers and crickets. All of these can be found at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center! Stop by for one of the great upcoming programs or head out on your own time. The trails are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days of the year. There is no parking fee and there is a map of the trails when you arrive. The best way to learn about ecology is to be out in it!
On Friday, July 12th at 10:00 a.m., learn about Magnificent Monarchs and the various butterfly species found throughout New York. With warm, spring days here and summer quickly approaching, native butterflies are emerging. Magnificent Monarchs make long journeys to end up in their summer and wintering grounds, but how exactly can they survive such a tiring trip? Join the environmental educator as participants discuss the life cycle and histories of monarchs and different butterflies that can be found in New York, then go outside and look for them around the center!
Then, on Saturday, July 20th at 8:00 p.m., there will be a Full Moon Hike where participants will enjoy a hike through the Center's woods learning about nocturnal animals and July's full moon - the Buck Moon. Participants should bring flashlights or headlamps if desired and are encouraged to dress for a nighttime summer walk through the woods.
The fee for these programs is only $4 per person, or $12 for a family. Children under the age of three are free! The recommended age for these programs is 5+.
