Sue Nix, of Oswego, is Lakeside Artisans' featured artist for the month of June.
A friend encouraged Nix to join her in taking a class in Precious Metal Clay (or "PMC") a few years ago. PMC is sterling, gold or other precious metal that has been mixed with other substances to make it into a workable clay. The clay is fired, the impurities burn off, and the artist is left with sterling or fine silver (or gold). Nix was immediately hooked and has been creating beautiful unique pieces of jewelry, many inspired by nature, ever since.
She has taken several classes over the years, learning new techniques and often experimenting with her own ideas. PMC is a relatively new medium in the art world, so often questions are answered by just using the clay and accepting the results.
Nix said she enjoys this aspect of creating with PMC and will be demonstrating some of the techniques used with PMC from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, June 13, at Lakeside Artisans, 191 W. First Str., in Oswego.
Sue is married to Ron Nix and the couple collectively has four adult children. She taught elementary school in Fitzhugh Park Elementary School, in Oswego, for 33 years and was known to many students as the "Science Lady." Nix believes that creativity exists in everyone and that it is what we use to solve all of life's problems. As a child, she was very interested in music, and as a teen, she sewed her own clothes and sewed for others to earn money. Creativity was a primary "tool" in her teaching years.
With her creations piling up at home, Nix joined Lakeside Artisans in July 2012, not only to sell her jewelry, but to meet and network with other artists. She enjoys interacting with customers at the store and learning about the mediums used by her colleagues. Nix has recently begun exploring polymer clay and using it with PMC and plans to offer some classes in polymer clay at Lakeside Artisans starting later this summer.
