The airways and social media continue to include a wide range of opinions about everything and everybody.
Depending on your particular “flavor” you can find information to support anything you too may agree with. Too often, however, what we “bite into” is downright misinformation. We all need to be able to figure out what is truth (based on facts) and what is fiction (based on opinion).
This is so very true when folks talk about the SNAP program we all hear about. So, I wanted to share a mixture of facts related to SNAP and how this program helps folks right here in Oswego County.
SNAP is a federally funded program that provides money for groceries to more than 40 million people in eligible low-income households which include older adults, families with children and disabled people. Statistic show that two-thirds of the homes receiving SNAP benefits are working households with children.
The statistics related to Oswego County are alarming to say the least. 12% of the population live in poverty and close to 30% of our children live in poverty. Changes in SNAP could end eligibility for free school lunches and breakfast for children.
Now you’re going to hear all the neigh sayers jump at their knee-jerk comments…”people expect a free handout without working,” “people who refuse to lift a finger to help themselves want the government to do it for them,” And of course, Clauda Tenney shouts out all the time…many of the people receive SNAP fraudulently.”
In a nutshell, cuts proposed in the “Big Beautiful Bill” will take food away from thousands of low-income honest people including children, the elderly, veterans, and working families.
What can you do?
Urge your County Legislator to pass a resolution against the bill. Ask them to tell Rep. Tenney to vote NO. You can find this information at: www.oswegocounty.com.
