Linda Eagan, 2018 Zonta Club Amelia Earhart Woman of the Year award winner, was our guest speaker this week.

Eagan was representing the Fulton Block Builders group and gave an update on the group's origination and success. Patterned after the Oswego Renaissance Association, Eagan started this grassroots effort in Fulton and has had an astounding success. In just two years, Block Builders has raised more than $300,000, helping about 350 homeowners pay for their exterior house work.

Most of the grants are going toward smaller renovations such as a new front door, landscaping or a fresh coat of paint. The average award is $1,000-$2,000. Interested homeowners are required to get at least half of their neighbors together to submit a joint application for the grants, requiring group communication and collaboration.

Ms. Eagan says the repairs are helping Fulton's aesthetic value, and expects that it will eventually improve the area's market value. The best thing about Block Builders, according to Eagan, is the collaboration and conversations between homeowners.
