"Women", a hilarious modern-day adaptation of the classic novel Little Women, opens next weekend at the CNY Arts Center.
This stage adaptation follows the same story as the original, but author Chiara Atik has updated the language for a contemporary audience while compressing the entire scope of the 500-page book into a single fast-paced hour.
"I grew up reading and watching Little Women and have always loved it," says director Ashley McKinstry. "It's a timeless story that a lot of people enjoy. But it's just been done so often. Why not do something a bit different? 'Women' takes that story and renews it in a fun, and funny, way. It's like an episode of HBO's Girls, but with fancy gowns."
"Getting to play Jo in this production has meant a ton to me, not only because she's the lead but because Jo March has been a role i've wanted to play since I saw Winona Ryder's rendition of Jo as a little girl," says Emma Francisco. Emma has been involved in a variety of productions at CNY Arts Center, often in behind-the-scenes and supporting roles. This is her first time as a lead. "Needless to say, this opportunity means a lot to me. This adaption is a must-see show with A+ casting!"
"Audience members don't need to read the book; in fact they probably shouldn't," says McKinstry, "This satirical modern-day rendition is one of the best entryways into the world of the March sisters and their ill-gotten romances. Plus, unlike the Louisa May Alcott original, we're serving charcuterie boards during ours."
Tickets are available at cnyartscenter.com. Performances are at the CNY Arts Center (121 Cayuga Street, Fulton, NY) on June 20, 21, 27, 28 at 7pm, and June 22 and 29th at 2pm. Limited table seating with charcuterie boards is available.
