On April 11, 2015, hundreds of SUNY Oswego students and community members filled Cheap Seats Sports Bar & Grill to attend the second annual For The Kids (#FTK2015) fundraiser for the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County (CAC).
Hosted by Delta Kappa Kappa Inc. (DKK), in collaboration with SUNY Oswego's Men's Varsity Ice Hockey team, For the Kids was the conclusion of a semester-long campaign created by SUNY Oswego students Denvol Haye, member of DKK, and Eli Kim-Swallow, a forward on the SUNY Oswego Men's Ice Hockey Team, with a goal of raising $10,000 for the CAC.
For the Kids (#FTK2015) began at 3:00 p.m. and continued into the night. Similar to last year's event, the fundraiser featured a chicken barbeque, both a silent and chinese auction, horse and carriage rides, outdoor games, and a live performance from "The Winslows" band. The event generated $4,700 for the campaign, nearly doubling last year's event.
In addition to the event at Cheap Seats, the campaign hosted an after event from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Alley Cats which raised $500. The 'For The Kids' campaign also consisted of a children free skate hosted by Men's Ice Hockey Team in February, in the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena. A "Bowl with the Lakers" fundraiser at Lighthouse Lanes, and a benefit at Cam's Pizzeria were held in March. In addition to all on site activities, the students created an online donation page at indiegogo.com that received nearly $2,000 in donations.
"We're very pleased with the results of our 'For the Kids' campaign," said Haye. " At first, I was skeptical about such an ambitious goal. However, it gave us something to continually work for thoughout the semester, and as we got closer to our goal that skeptism quickly turned to motivation.
With more than $12,000 raised in support of the CAC, Swallow, who is now a senior at Oswego, added that they are looking forward to appointing younger members of their organizations to continue 'For the Kids' for years to come. "It was encouraging to see the increase in support we received from not only our fellow students but from the community as well this year. This continual growth of our campaign and support group will help cement For The Kids (#FTK2015) within the community, said Swallow.
We would like to thank our community sponsors like Mark Wallace of Cheap Seats for his generosity of the venue and providing a great atmosphere for our main event. To the folks at iHeart Oswego & iHeart Corp in their continued help and support of the event for two years now. CIT copy & print center that generously donated the printing of the fliers and banners. Anthony from CAM's pizzeria for their help and support with their fundraiser and Alley Cats for providing the great after-party.
