"Makayla Walker's barbecue was nothing but success," according to event coordinator, Jennifer Losurdo, who explained the all-day, chicken dinner turn-out at The American Legion on Saturday, March 30.
The event saw more than 400 people in attendance and the pre-sale tickets ran out before the event even began, Losurdo stated.
"We actually ran out of chicken dinners and had to get a grill and started to cook hot dogs and sausages that people were eager to purchase," she said. "There was a silent auction in which we raffled off (about) 120 baskets for people to choose from. I'd say we raised about $30,000 by the time the checks were added to the funds raised from the actual event. The amount of people at the event I'd say is due to the family just being a well-liked individuals within the community."
Makayla Walker is undergoing intense chemotherapy treatments for an abdominal desmoid tumor. She is receiving treatments at Golisano Children's Hospital, in Syracuse, with the support from the community and her family Shawn, Kristina, her older brother Tyler, and dog Riley who reside in Oswego.
All funds raised go to her medical expenses and treatments.
