Oswego City Mayor Robert Corradino recently spoke at the luncheon meeting of the Oswego Rotary Club held at Bishop’s Commons.

He started by saying that “Talking about Oswego is his favorite topic.”

He briefly showed photographs and reviewed some of the past accomplishments in the city during his predecessor’s, Billy Barlow, administration when he served on the Common Council. He praised especially the willingness of Oswego’s citizens and officials to “step up and help.”

Corradino described some of the developments that are under way or in the planning stages that will have much impact on the residents and visitors to Oswego. The Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary will be a boon to tourism, boating, and diving and will contribute to many other businesses and services as visitors arrive. The National Park designation for part of Fort Ontario will have a similar impact once it receives Congressional approval.

The State’s Consolidated Highway Improvement Program will provide funds for cities to repair state highways that are located within their boundaries without cost to the cities. Oswego will use those funds to completely rebuild a section of Route 48 (West First Street) in the vicinity of the Post Office. Plans are under development to convert the former Shapiro dealership on West First Street into new headquarters for the Oswego Police Department and a community center. Old city hall on Water Street will soon open with a brewery in the basement, restaurant on the first floor, and apartments on the top floor.

Other plans for the near future include expenditure for television advertising, refurbishment of the Ponzi building at Fort Ontario, increasing foot patrols by the Police Department, needed repairs to City Hall, and improvements to the hydroelectric High Dam and the Visitor Center. A developer has plans to restore the old railroad building across Utica Street from Paul’s Big M to house a brewery and restaurant.

Anyone interested in becoming a Rotarian or to learn more about Rotary’s humanitarian work around the world and in the community is invited to attend a meeting of the Oswego Rotary Club any Tuesday at noon at Bishop’s Commons. The building is fully accessible with convenient parking. Visiting Rotarians and guests are welcome and may reserve lunch by contacting TGorman13126@Gmail.com.
