Write a commentMichael Harter, a lifetime resident of the City of Oswego, has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Common Council as First Ward Councilor.
Raised in the Oswego community, Mr. Harter is the father of two sons who attend Oswego City schools. He has been a technology teacher in the Phoenix Central School District for the past nineteen years, and is actively involved in many youth sports programs. Harter coached for Oswego Little League Baseball, and has been a member Oswego Minor Hockey Association for the past seven years. In addition, he is a member of the Oswego Hibernians Club and is a regular attendee/supporter of the Oswego Speedway.
"While growing up in Oswego, I was able to observe the city prosper and grow while enjoying a great deal of development. Unfortunately, the last few decades have been a different story. Over the years, the City of Oswego has fallen on hard times. As I drive through the First Ward, it is apparent that many homes are in disrepair. I would push for the continuation of Code Enforcement on these properties that the Barlow Administration initiated,” Harter said. "Having participated in the Oswego Renaissance Association Program, I feel that bringing a positive outlook and a sense of pride back to the city and its residents is vital, while also instilling confidence in our neighborhoods and encouraging homeowners to invest in their property to restore the integrity of our community. Our neighborhoods are our most valuable asset and need to be treated as such,” Harter continued. Mr. Harter stressed the importance of developing a strong waterfront community stating he believes the waterfront is poorly utilized, and he would push for a resurgence in that area.
"At this point in my life, I feel now is the time to contribute to my community and try to make a positive impact. I've attended the public waterfront engagement meetings, participated in the Oswego Renaissance Association program and watched what Mayor Barlow has accomplished in the last year regarding code enforcement and the improvements with the Department of Public Works. I want to get involved and help continue the positive changes I'm witnessing,” Harter added. Mr. Harter continued by adding among his major concerns is the lack of road paving taking place in the First Ward as well as high water and sewer rates burdening homeowners. "I want to be there to help my neighbors and be a voice for First Ward residents. “I believe that strong communication is an important part of this position, and, if elected, I intend on maintaining a solid rapport with the Oswego community," Harter concluded.
Michael Harter is a registered member of the Republican party and a newcomer to local politics.
