Local business owner Anne Backer, of `Taste the World` in Canal Commons, brought to life on June 15 the first weekly “Mugs and Motors," an antique, classic, and muscle car, truck, and motorcycle show.

Every Sunday during the summer from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., West First Street is blocked off and becomes a showroom for all kinds of antique, classic, and muscle cars, trucks and motorcycles.

“Mugs and Motors” first Sunday produced 44 cars/trucks with 1 classic motorcycle.  Attendees came from the Syracuse/Liverpool area as well as the Oswego area.  Backer said she is fielding calls from all over New York State and other states such as Maryland and Virginia.

“It is this type of enthusiasm that will help this event grow in popularity,” she said.

The Sunday shows feature live music and street vendors.  Many of the local retail stores are open with sidewalk displays.  The weekly event is free to the public and car and cycle owners.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to sit and enjoy the music.

"Today I was blessed in many ways," Backer said. "First, I had the opportunity to display my Dad's car at the first 'Mugs and Motors social.  Second, it was confirmed to me that I am surrounded by great people who volunteer their time willingly for the benefit of others.  And third, the community showed great support by coming out either with their vehicle or just as spectators.  I couldn't have asked for a more successful kick off of the 'Mugs and Motors' social."

Backer is a member of the Downtown Business Association, “The DOERS” who supported her idea and many of its members volunteered their time to help the event run smoothly.  ZINK Shirts, The City of Oswego and The Greater Oswego/Fulton Chamber of Commerce are also supporting sponsors.

“Everyone is welcome; it was a great sense of community,” Backer said. “If you have or know someone who has an antique, classic or muscle, car, truck, or motorcycle please encourage them to join us every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.”

As the event grows, prizes will be incorporated into the show.

“Mugs and Motors” takes place every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., downtown Oswego, West First Street starting at West Bridge Street and going South. The event is free for everyone. Live music and street vendors will also be at the event. For additional information, contact Anne Backer at (315)-216-4625  or email at tastetheworld.coffee@gmail.com.
