Nancy Covell Metcalf, 90, a life-long resident of Oswego, NY, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025 at St. Luke Family of Caring Skilled Nursing Home in Oswego.
Born on December 13,1934, Nancy was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Marie Connolly Covell. She married the love of her life, James R. Metcalf (her Jimmy) in 1956.
Nancy was a graduate of St. Paul’s Academy and Oswego High School, class of 1952. Nancy pursued a degree in education, earning her Batchelor’s Degree from Oswego State University in 1956. She spent decades as an educator, retiring in 1996. She was a beloved and respected Kindergarten teacher, teaching at almost every elementary school in the Oswego City School District over the course of her career. After her retirement, Nancy was a a substitute teacher at Trinity Catholic School in Oswego, where she also taught religious education. She also advised and mentored student teachers from SUNY Oswego.
Nancy was an active communicant of St. Paul’s Parish, serving on the Altar Rosary Society and St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Nancy loved life, especially her family and time spent with them at their home on Oak Hill, the camp at Moon Beach, the Lake House in New Haven and later, at their home on Walnut Street. She cherished raising her children with Jimmy and spending time with the entire family, especially the many family vacations, planned and impromptu family gatherings and reliving family memories. She embraced her Irish heritage, traveling with the entire family to Ireland in 2001. Nancy deeply understood and cherished the value of family, especially being a grandmother. Her family always knew “Annie” loved and supported them in every way.
Nancy loved SU Basketball, traveling to many Big East Tournaments in New York City. She and Jimmy also attended several Final Four games, including the 2003 national championship in New Orleans where Syracuse won the NCAA title. Nancy was a deeply loyal woman with many, many friends, near and far, who could always count on her. She leaves behind cherished memories of her 6th Street gang gals and The Frogs.
Nancy is predeceased her beloved husband, James, who passed in 2021 after 65 years of marriage.
Nancy is survived by her four children, Benjamin (Cris) Metcalf, Margaret (Jack) Pryor, James M. (Karen) Metcalf, and Adam (Helene) Metcalf, all of Oswego. She is also survived by her 10 beloved grandchildren, Marnie (Shamim) Akbar, Joshua (Jennifer) Pryor, Patrick Metcalf, Katie (Bobby) Metcalf, Jake Metcalf, and Mariah (Ibra) Metcalf, and Samuel, Sean, Josie, and Wilson Metcalf. In addition, she is survived by 5 great grandchildren, Trey Rorick, Finnian and Emma Pryor, Noah Metcalf-Akbar, Charlotte DiPronio and two nephews, David (Patricia) Covell and Michael Covell and their families. Nancy is also predeceased by her parents and her brother and sister-in law, Donald and Martha Covell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Oswego, NY at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 3, 2025.
There are no calling hours. Burial at Oswego Town Rural Cemetery will take place in the spring. A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be scheduled for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Human Concerns, 75 East 2nd Street, Oswego, NY or Trinity Catholic School, 115 East 5th Street, Oswego, NY.
