Fitzhugh Park Elementary School second-graders recently celebrated National Agriculture Week by getting their hands dirty planting tomato and basil seeds.

Sixty students listened to a book that was donated to the school, titled “Tomatoes by Neela” by Padma Lakshmi. It is a yearly program that Fitzhugh Park participates in that highlights the importance of agriculture and how it fits into everyday life.

According to the second-grade teaching team, the book and the hands-on planting allowed students to have a new appreciation for the efforts made by those involved in agriculture and how farmers provide vital necessities that many take for granted.
